invitations: a journey in child-led learning

Hey stranger,

As a parent and a teacher specializing in literacy, I've discovered a powerful approach to nurturing my children's innate curiosity and love for learning. It's a journey rooted in trust, belief, and the beauty of choice. This approach, which I fondly refer to as "Lit Kids," revolves around the concept of invitation. Today, I want to share with you the essence of this philosophy and how it has transformed not just my teaching methods, but also my relationship with my children.

The Essence of Invitation

Invitations in the context of Lit Kids are exactly that - invitations. They are opportunities I set up at home, carefully curated and thoughtfully presented, from which my children can choose. This isn't about directing their learning, but about trusting their innate wisdom and timing. By creating these invitations and genuinely giving them the power to choose, I am sending a powerful message: "I trust you. I believe in you. And I know you will engage when you are truly inspired."

This belief in the power of invitation is not just a teaching tool; it's a window into understanding our children and ourselves. As I observe their reactions to these invitations, and as I notice my own responses to their choices, I gain insights into the internal dynamics at play. It's a continuous loop of learning and understanding, for both the parent and the child.

Invitation in Literacy

As an experienced literacy teacher, I've gathered a wealth of tools that empower me to create heart-centered learning invitations for children. These tools enable me to observe and understand each child's unique response to learning stimuli, guiding me to tailor invitations that spark their intrinsic motivation. This approach is about more than just presenting options; it's about creating a safe and nurturing space where children feel free to choose, explore, and express themselves. When a child says 'no' to an invitation, I've learned to see it not as a setback or a defiance of authority, but as valuable feedback. This 'no' is a window into their current interests, readiness, or learning style. Equipped with this understanding, I can adapt my approach, offering alternative pathways that resonate more closely with their needs and curiosity. In this way, these tools under my belt do more than facilitate learning; they foster a deep sense of safety and trust in the learning process, for both the educator and the child.

Components of a Successful Invitation

So, what exactly does an invitation consist of? Here are the key components that I've integrated into Lit Kids, not just as a part of the content but as steps for you to begin the process of inviting your children into this enriching world:

1. Freedom within Structure: Provide a framework within which your child can explore freely. It's about balancing guidance with autonomy.

2. The Idea of Loose Parts (Reggio Inspired): Embrace the Reggio Emilia approach by incorporating loose parts into learning. This encourages creativity, experimentation, and exploration in a child's learning journey.

3. Beautifully Displayed: The aesthetic aspect of learning materials can significantly enhance engagement and interest.

4. A Blend of Old and New: Combine familiar items or concepts with new ones to spark curiosity. This approach respects the child's comfort zone while gently encouraging exploration of new ideas.

5. Invitation Only: Ensure that learning is always presented as a choice, not a mandate. This respects the child's agency and fosters a love for learning.

The Journey Ahead

This is the big picture of the work we will be doing in Lit Kids. You'll find yourself returning to these principles, especially in the beginning, as you embark on this beautiful and dynamic, heart-centered practice of invitations.

The journey of invitation is not just about teaching our children; it's about growing with them. It's about creating an environment where learning is not just an activity but a shared experience, filled with discovery, joy, and mutual respect. As we go through this journey together, I hope to not just teach but also learn from you and your experiences with your children.

Let's embrace this journey with open hearts and minds, ready to explore the endless possibilities that come with trusting and believing in our children's potential. Welcome to the world of Lit Kids!

With Love,

Maria
